Welcome to the World of GP!If you are enrolled in General Paper, then you are signed up for the experience of an academic lifetime! It won't take you long to realize that this is definitely not your typical English class. Grammar will be a familiar friend, but we will write a lot more than you're probably used to. Not only that, but we will be writing about topics that span the curriculum.
Stem cell research, world leaders, gun control and immigration are just a few issues we may discuss, and then some days will be just plain 'ole English class- reading short stories or poetry or novels. All of this...in English class?! YES! You'll write about what you read both in and out of class; you'll write about what you learned in Chemistry or Geometry or AP Human Geography; you'll present well-researched writing using MLA style; you'll edit and discuss a peer's work for polish; you'll write alone for precision. |
Worried about the amount of work that comes with a class that attempts to juggle two curricula at once? Well, don't- there's enough overlap that we can find a time and place for everything. But you do need to be ready for an academic challenge. This is an advanced class; therefore, I expect a lot from you! I'll be here to guide you every step of the way, and if you need help, I'm just an email or text away! And you can always draw on the support of your classmates- set up a Google Hangout or book some time in the Media Center if need be!
As demanding as this class is, that is how rewarding it will be as well. Not only will you perfect basic essays styles like expository and argumentative, but you will be able to conduct research and write a discursive essay, preparing you not only for the General Paper exam, but for AICE International History and AICE Global Perspectives, as well as college and beyond. To understand what is expected, read the Cambridge Syllabus below. I have also included a released General Paper 8004 Question Paper for you to peruse. |
